Self-balancing two-wheeled boards are predominanely powered by lithium-ion batteries; There have been some instance of defective batteries that have either short circuited or overheated, leading to devices catching fire.

This has led the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission "CPSC" to launch an investigation into the safety of the product. Hoverboards spontaneously igniting and causing fires, has led to lawsuits in Louisiana and Alabama and a statement from the Chairman of CPSC specifically addressing fire safety concerns.

U.K. authorities have expressed other concerns, as many of the boards have overheated and ignited, due to faulty wiring.

Additionally, in the United States, the CPSC has reported there have been over 20 injuries reported from hoverboard-related incidents, including eight fractures, five sprains, four contusions and several head injuries since September of 2015.
